BENEFITS OF DANCING

I've long been advocating the fact that dancing is a great form of exercise for the body and the brain! The research supports this fact. Both BBC documentaries 'How To Stay Young' and 'The Truth About Getting Fit' stated how beneficial dancing is for you. I've also recently read a fabulous book called 'The Dance Cure' by Dr Peter Lovatt. He's a former professional dancer turned psychologist who has spent two decades studying why we dance and what it does for us.

Dancing is a fantastic way to stay fit, young and healthy because of the all round workout you get, whether you're doing a slower steady paced dance class or a more energetic dance fitness class. You use lots of different muscles all over the body and not just the major ones, like in cycling, swimming and running. You also keep your brain working too, as you have to remember the steps and what comes next, which is very important as you get older.

When you exercise the body releases endorphins, which result in feelings of well-being.

Since you dance to music, in a fun social environment, it's particularly effective at this and one of the best forms of exercise.

It's also amazing what positive effects dancing has specifically had on people suffering with parkinsons disease. It has scientifically been proven that it can improve mobility, emotional well being and body discomfort, improve the way people think about and solve problems and reduce feelings of depression, anger and tension.

I truly believe that everyone should allow a bit of dancing in their life. With all the potential positive benefits to be gained, there's really no reason not to dance, whether that's in the comfort of your own home, dancing at a party/club or joining a dance class. I've never underestimated the value of the social element of dancing, which is why I've endeavoured to create a really fun friendly atmosphere at all my classes, so that everyone feels welcome. I've organised social events too, such as meals out, tea and cake with others from class, theatre trips locally and in London and dance parties where dancers gather from across all my classes.

With so many benefits on offer, you really should try out a dance class and learn something new. I'm sure you'll have loads of fun!
